“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I want you to admit your husband’s crime.”

“My husband’s crime?”

“The assault on that young woman. Admit it,” I instructed her, well aware that this could shatter her once I released the recording.

“I have nothing to admit.”

“Are you really going to continue defending him, Alison?” I inquired, struggling to comprehend why anyone would protect such a scumbag. Perhaps she knew about her father’s crimes too? That would be my next question if I could get her to play along.

“I’m telling the truth. I have nothing to admit. He didn’t do it.”

“Alison, I’m not playing here. We made an agreement. Answer the question.”

“But you haven’t asked me anything.”

“Fine, what did your husband do to that poor woman?” I demanded.

“Jared...”

“Answer!” I interrupted her.

“Please... I can’t.”

“Which is exactly why I don’t believe you don’t know what he did!” I snapped. “Now answer.”

She looked away, and for the first time, I saw it—a shattered expression on her face. When she turned back to me, there were tears in her eyes, real ones, not the tears I had tried to coax fromher through pain, anger, or pleasure. I wanted those guilt-ridden tears, and finally, they glistened in her eyes.

“Fine, he did it,” she whispered. “He raped her.”

I scrutinized Alison as she maintained eye contact, but I had heard true confessions before. I had seen sincerity and truth in people’s eyes, but Alison’s admission lacked it all. There was no conviction in her voice, and her eyes were devoid of any emotion. No, this wasn’t the truth. She was concealing something from me.

“Don’t lie to me,” I warned.

“But you told me to admit it!” she protested.

“And now that you have, I don’t believe you. I know when you’re telling the truth, so speak it.”

“I just did!”

I tightened my grip on her arm, pushing her back against the dresser.

“Tell me the fucking truth, Alison!” I yelled.

“Please, no! I can’t!” she screamed. “Please, please, Jared, don’t make me say it!”

She held up her hand as though she were terrified of me, and tears were poised to roll down her cheeks as she gazed up at me. Alison was actually trembling beneath my grasp, yet this time, I genuinely believed her when she claimed her husband wasn’t a rapist. He was something else. He had done something, but whatever it was, it had shattered Alison completely, rendering her unable to speak it out loud.

Chapter 13

-Alison-

“Warren, I’m home!” I called into the house.

I didn’t hear any response, indicating he might not be home, and I allowed myself a hopeful smile. Things had been rough between us lately, with affection seemingly evaporating. Today, though, I was determined to rekindle our connection. I hurried upstairs, took a shower, shaved meticulously, and then ventured into my closet to select a seductive outfit. I donned dark red lingerie and draped a robe loosely around me, ensuring that Warren would have to work for my affections. I returned to the bathroom to apply a light layer of makeup, something I knew he would love messing up, and sprayed my favorite perfume.

Descending the stairs, I contemplated preparing some food for him. While I wasn’t the best cook, I wanted to make the effort. I knew he would appreciate a homemade meal. He was in for a delightful surprise when he returned, and I sensed hisarrival was imminent. However, just as I was heading to the fridge, the doorbell rang.
