"Starting to enjoy it now?" I teased, then turned around and drew him close again, encouraging him to encircle me with his arms. We remained in that embrace, as the rest of the world seemed to fade away, losing ourselves in this seemingly "normal" realm of ours. There were no fears, no pretenses, no expectations—only the two of us and the gentle musicenveloping the room. It was both heavenly and torturous, for I was aware that this blissful peace wouldn't last forever.
“In the normal world, this is where you make your move,” I whispered, looking at his lips.
“Make my move?”
“On the girl you like.”
“I don’t—”
“For the sake of the game,” I interrupted, not wanting him to ruin the moment.
Jared grasped the situation and fell into a comfortable silence, drawing nearer to me. I tilted my head back, and his lips met mine in a tender kiss, which soon deepened into something more passionate. A soft moan escaped me, but we couldn't afford to rush into things just yet. Every time we started, it inevitably evolved into a game of power. I wasn't ready to let our "normal" world come to an end just yet, so I gently pulled back, noting the unmistakable desire burning in his eyes.
“Birthday sex comes later,” I told him.
“Birthday sex?”
I chuckled at his echoing of the words. He appeared genuinely puzzled when I mentioned it, as if the term were entirely new to him. However, I promptly diverted his attention by compelling him to twirl me once more. This time, he appeared more engaged in the dance, for with each new move I showed him, he would eagerly pull me back into his embrace, showering me with kisses. It quickly evolved into a tantalizing and dangerous game, as those kisses had always been my Achilles' heel.
Chapter 48
-Jared-
“I’m not sure I understand this ‘normal’ thing,” I told Alison as we lay in the backyard, watching the sun gradually descending in the sky. We lay side by side, our feet pointing in opposite directions, so only our heads remained close.
After lunch, she insisted we come out here and gaze at the sky. I found it rather strange and dull. It was just the sky.
“Don’t you find it peaceful?” she questioned, turning her head to look at me.
“I find it boring.”
“How?”
“It’s the sky! It’s not like we don’t see it every day,” I pointed out, turning my head to focus on her.
She graced me with that sweet smile again, and it was already wreaking havoc on my thoughts, igniting a desire to kiss her. Shit, I shouldn't be feeling this way, I scolded myself, shifting myfocus back to the sky. Yet, it seemed as if today we were shedding our true selves.
For a brief moment, I could even momentarily forget the cold-hearted woman she had always been and still was. However, deep down, I knew that despite Alison's professed desire for peace moving forward, she remained fundamentally unchanged. This day, this week, this month wouldn't alter anything. We hadn't changed.
“Well, we could look at the clouds and say what they look like,” she suggested, then lifted her hand and traced around a small cloud that looked like, well, a cloud to me. “It sort of looks like a cat.”
“It’s a cloud.”
She sighed and moved her hand to another cloud, outlining it. “An elephant.”
“It’s a cloud,” I countered.
She groaned, growing tired of me correcting her. “Give me your hand,” she ordered.
Had I not agreed to this attempt at a normal day, I wouldn’t have listened to her. However, since I had, I raised my hand to meet hers. She delicately enfolded her smaller hand around mine, directing my fingers to trace the outline of the cloud she had chosen to resemble an elephant.
“Don’t you see it?” she asked.
“No,” I replied, my gaze having shifted back to her. She looked so absorbed in that cloud that it was almost amusing.
Alison sighed and released my hand. She let both of ours fall, hers coming to rest on her stomach as she smiled at the sky.
“I once wished I could fly,” she admitted.
