He shook his head. “No, I ate it because I was intrigued by what it tasted like.”

“Then try it now.”

“But I know what it tastes like.”

“Could you just take a piece?” I challenged.

He appeared uncertain but eventually picked up a piece, biting off a chunk from the edge and chewing it slowly. I took a smaller piece, popping it into my mouth, and smiled at him.

“It tastes delicious, doesn’t it?”

“It’s fine,” he replied, causing me to shake my head. Perhaps I should have expected such a response. Besides my own misery, it seemed that nothing could truly stir Jared’s emotions. Maybe that wasn’t so surprising. He hadn’t lived a life filled with excitement. He was accustomed to dampening any enthusiasm. Perhaps, in the end, it had become his personality. In his perilous world, I was certain that being too emotional was not an advantage.

I checked on the cake, watching it slowly bake, before turning back to Jared who was savoring his meal. I placed my hands on the kitchen island and leaned toward him.

“So, what’s the plan for today?” I inquired, but he remained uncooperative, shrugging. “Why can’t you tell me just this once?”

“Because I don’t really have a plan,” he confessed.

“How can you not have a plan? This is the last day. You must want to do something.”

“I want to do a lot of things. You hurt me for years. I want to do all those things to you too, and therefore, it makes it hard for me to decide. I thought I would simply let the moment inspire me.”

“And do you feel inspired?”

“It’s still a difficult choice, but don’t expect to escape today without some bruises,” he warned me with a dark smile.

“Of course,” I sighed, and he continued eating while I observed him. Yet, as I glanced at the piece of chocolate resting on the side of his plate, something crossed my mind. Jared had never truly known normalcy. His childhood, high school years, and life in general had all been far from ordinary. He had never indulgedin anything solely for the sake of enjoyment, and it left me thinking.

“What if we didn’t spend the day with me tied up and subjected to unspeakable things?” I proposed, catching Jared’s attention again, causing him to furrow his brow.

“Why wouldn’t we? It’s my day, I get to decide.”

“No, I understand that, and I agree. You can decide what happens today, but can I suggest something?”

He nodded.

“You have never truly had a normal childhood, and I know I was part of the reason for that. You have never gone on a real date, have you? Or tried things like enjoying a birthday with friends. Soon, you’ll enter a very special kind of marriage where nothing will be the usual sort of experience. Today might be your only chance to experience anything normal, starting with this breakfast and the cake. So what if we spend the day doing all those things you never got to do, things that can be heartwarming too?”

Jared contemplated my suggestion, not dismissing it outright, but his expression remained puzzled as he began to speak, “Why would you suggest this?”

“Because it will never be enough. Whatever you do to me, it will never be enough. I took a lot away from you, so now I want to give something back.”

“Do you really expect me to believe you feel guilty?”

I nodded, but a small voice in my head told me I was lying. It wasn’t genuine guilt that drove me to suggest this, but rather the realization that he wasn’t the only one who hadn’t experienced everything they desired. Someone had always been forbidden to me, yet there were so many things I had yearned to do with them. We had only one day together. Why not make that day special? Why not create memories that would last? He had already humiliated me in countless ways, making my bodybetray me with his dark touch. Why not try something different this time?

“I’m not sure that’s how I want to spend the day,” he admitted.

“All right, then how about we start the day like that, and if you decide to stop, we’ll go to the blue room, and you can put me through whatever you desire?”

Jared pondered my suggestion once more, but gradually, he began nodding, appearing to embrace my idea.

Chapter 47

-Jared-

Alison decided to wait with the cake, so it was placed in the fridge to cool. After finishing breakfast, we returned to the bedroom where Alison prepared herself, and we both dressed casually. Once we were ready to start the day, she approached me with a smile on her lips.
